I went to the Nationality Checking Service (Southwark, SE London) yesterday, 23/2/2013, and I was told that the restriction against travelling for a few days after applying for naturalisation has recently been removed.

However, the FAQ doesn't reflect this change

that's correct. the rules changed on 16th July 2012 - now, for both in country and out of country (except Hong Kong and british overseas territories) applications the receiving authority is the same (home secy) so one is free to travel immediately after submission of application unless travelling to Hong Kong and british overseas territories.
