you don't need a written reference letter for citizenship. Where did you read that?

I know we dont need written reference but the space in the home office application seems very less , how can they fill in all the information about how they know me in that space.thanks

All the need to write is either :

"family friend"

or

"work colleague"

A full description is not necessary.
