Hello,

I came into the country on a diplomatic dependent visa in September 1998. My sponsor left the country in 2003 and remained in UK, which meant i was unlawfully resident for c. 9years. I applied for ILR in 2012 using the 14 years rule and was granted ILR in Feb 2013. Please can you advise when is the earliest i can apply for citizenship given the fact i had years of 9 years of unlawful residence preceeding my ILR approval? Do i have to wait for 1 year after ILR was granted of 5 years?
I will greatly appreciate everyones opinion on this. :) :)

5 years after you applied for ILR (as your lawful residence started then).

Can I be naturalised as a British citizen?
Chapter 18: Naturalisation at discretion.

Change the 5 years to 3 years if you are the spouse or civil partner of a British citizen.
