Original documents missing?

Hi there
I have just completed my passport ID interview which was all fine & have been told to expect my UK passport within the next 10 working days. However, my original documents (including my current Australian passport) have not yet been returned to me - I chose the secure mail return option & paid the extra for it.
The interview officer today told me to ring the Passport Adviceline & quote my reference number to try to chase up the docs but when I rang them they were quite unhelpful and just said that my docs could come any time - even weeks after my UK passport arrives!
I'm finding this all pretty stressful as my brother in Aust. is not well & I'm nervous that I may need my Aust. passport to jump on a plane at short notice.
Has anyone out there had a similar experience and/or have any suggestions as to what I should do next?
