My mother is English and migrated to NZ in the 1970's and I was born in 1978. I am therefor eligible for citizenship and and have the forms ready to fill in. I have been living in the UK for the past 8 years with on my NZ passport with my Right of Abode.

Questions:

1.12 - I am in a same sex relationship and my wife and I were married in NZ in on 19th August (we also had a civil union in NZ on 10th August). Do I tick "married" even though the UK marriage equality hasn't fully come in yet?

1.18 - How do I find the name of my local authority in relationship to the citizenship ceremony?

1.27 - I have no idea if I'm meant to put my Grandparents names and details. They were both British born. I have read the related information and can't work out whether I need to or not.

2.5 - I am self employed. Where do I find the address of tax office or tax office reference?

When I read what documents to send it it says my mothers full birth certificate (which I have); and either Her certificate of naturalisation or papers showing legal adoption or her expired passport. So I assume I need to get my mother to send an old passport over as the first two don't apply, what if she does not have an expired passport?

Lastly is there any way my passport and birth certificates can be checked instead of sending them in?

1.18 when you get your approval you will be informed Else from your post code you can find that. Do a google search and use your address and Citizenship Ceremony together and then you can phone up the local office from the details.

1.27 not required if you do not have the details

2.5 From your accountant and or returns they would have filed on your behalf.

Final answer.

search for the Nationality Checking service (NCS) for your address and if you submit your application through them, they will make copies of all the required documents and return the originals to you. They typically charge a fee of 55 to 60 quid.

One more question what is the answer I give for the question "State how your mother acquired citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies. If this was by registration or naturalisation, give the certificate number." Do I just put she was born in England to British parents?

So I've contacted my local checking service and they are now researching to see if I am able to have my documents checked there as they haven't had a UKM citizenship come through their office.

Now when I read the documents needed to send in i need my passport and birth cert, and my mothers birth cert - all of which I have. However I also need either: her cert of naturalisation (she doesn't have one), OR her papers showing her legal adoption (she isn't adopted), OR her expired citizen of the UK and Colonies passport (which she doesn't have). Not sure what to do?

Does she have an expired British Passport?

No she doesn't! It seems there is no alternative. I'm hoping the checking service may come up with a solution.

Her Birth Certificate showing she was born in the UK before 1983 and thus British perhaps.

Yup, I've managed to get her full birth certificate, she was born in 1948 and I was born in 1978. Its just confusing that I need either of the other three supporting documents - neither of which I have or can get. It seems there is no alternative so am wondering if they will accept my application without them.

Actually if you look at Chapter 7 at 7.3.3 (click) you will see that your Mother's Birth Certificate should suffice as she was born in the UK.
