Council Tax issues

Hi, I applied for Naturalisation last week but I am a bit concerned about council tax issues. 2 years of the 5 years in question, I stayed with a friend of mine to whose name the house was registered to for Council Tax purposes. My friend was a student so didn't pay council tax. This makes the accomodation exempt as per Council records. My friend then moved on and I was living alone at the accommodation and paid the reduced rate of council tax for another year and and four months but the accomodation was still registered in his name. Is my application going to be refused? And what do I do as I have just submitted the application?

If you paid no council tax this may have been fraud. If you received a 25% reduction! thus paid 75% that is correct and nothing to worry about! even though technically it should have been in your name.

What do you suggest I do now? Contact the council and repay the dues. Or perhaps withdraw the application, get the tax issues in order and re apply. Basically is there anything I can do at this stage?

If you didn't pay council tax, you should firstly make sure you were liable (you will be unless it's a house of multiple occupancy) then contact the council and just tell them you were liable, if asked just say you'd informed them before but it an invoice wasn't sent. That way you'll avoid embarrassment and pay what you were liable for.

Do you know how the HO investigates these cases? 1) Do they just check if you have any conviction and if not, that's fine 2) Do they check if you paid council tax every year during the qualifying period and also investigate if there was 1 person, more than one person, etc...?
I ask because I think it's quite common for landlords that let out rooms not to declare the tenant and get 25% off, but there is nothing the tenant can do in that case, because they usually pay the rent and that includes all bills, CT, etc...
