Mother born in UK before 1983, I was born abroad.

Hi all,

Was hoping someone would be able to answer my questions! My mother was born in the UK prior to Jan 1 1983 so as far as I know, despite being born abroad I qualify for BC by descent.

My question is, how do I go about getting a passport? Do I need to first obtain citizenship and then get a passport, or can I just apply for the passport?

My mother doesn't have a British passport, only her birth certificate - is that sufficient enough along with my birth certificate/ her marriage certificate and my current Australian passport to apply for the passport with the C1 form, or does she need to obtain a passport and then I obtain the citizenship first before applying for the passport?

Thanks for any help in advance, I really appreciate it.

Harry

Ps - what are the passport processing times like when applying abroad? I noticed the thread but couldn't find any information for when applying abroad.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply!

Do you mean my Mum has to register and then I can? Or I can just register straight away, and then apply for a passport?

Thanks in advance,

Oops.

Your mother is automatically British, if she was not a daughter of a foreign diplomat or from an enemy country.

When were you born? If you were born from 1 Jan 1983, then you are automatically a British citizen by descent (2(1)(a)), if your mother was British when you were born.

Sorry about the previous answer.

Excellent!

Thanks for the response, it's good to get someone confirm what I was previously thinking.

So I can just apply for a passport now then?

Thanks vinny!

Yes, if you are British (as explained above).
