British Passport application & sending current NZ passpo

I am in the process of applying for my first British Passport and am aware that as part of my application, I am required to include my current New Zealand passport. I am not keen to be without my NZ passport for any length of time. When I applied for Citizenship, I took my original documents in for a checking service and photocopies were taken so I could retain my original documents. Is there something similar when applying for a British Passport? I am aware of the Check & Send, but this does not appear to say anything about being allowed to retain original documents.
