Naturalisation Application - 6 month delay

Hi,
I just wanted to ask for some advice regarding my naturalisation application.
I applied directly (not through NCS) on the 24th October 2013 (my application arrived just before the rules changed with respect to the verbal test required). I received an acknowledgement on December 12th. To this date I haven't heard anything else, and on the 24th of this month it will be six months. I looked at processing timelines thread and it seemed like all the applications sent by the end of last year have been dealt with already, so I wanted to ask:
1 - Are there specific issues that could delay the application?
2 - What to do if 6 months pass?
3 - Is anyone here in the same situation?
4 - Could this delay have anything to do with the old rules vs new rules, etc.
Note that my application is under 5years residence + 1 yr ILR.
Many thanks for your help.
