EU National and Natualisation - Please Help

Hi,

I would very much appreciate any advice.
I'm an EU national and obtained a permanent residence document (the blue card) in January 2012.
I know that I've been eligible to apply for naturalisation since January 2013 (5+1 years of residence). I'm planning to submit my application within the next few weeks but my EU passport expired two weeks ago. I have an ID valid until 22 of June.
My questions are:

1. Can I use my expired EU passport to apply for naturalisation?
2. Do I need to provide documents proving my residence in the UK since obtaining the PR in January 2012?
If yes, are bank statements sufficient as I had a long gap in employment after obtaining my PR?

I would be very grateful for help.

Thank you Jambo!
I'm really happy you replied as I used to read all your posts in the EU section of this forum when I was struggling with my and my non-EU husband's applications. You've help so many people and your advice is always so helpful! :)

Just one quick question to make sure I know what to do. Are the following documents sufficient in my case: passport and ID card; PR; UK knowledge certificate; proof of English language proficiency? Do I have to provide anything else?
