Canadian applying for British Passport

Hello everyone, I hope I am postng in the right place!
I am a 33 year old, born and living in Canada. So born before 1983 when British immigration laws changed.
My father is Canadian (so we will leave him out of this), my mother is British (was carrying British passport when I was born as well as currently) but born in the Philippines. Her parents were both British when she was born, however, her mother was originally Spanish and her father was also born in the Philippines she believes (I know, she should know this but isn't sure). If not, he was born in England. We are trying to confirm this. She does have his birth certificate somewhere.
As I understand it, when born before 1983 to a British mother, there is now chance to get a British passport but where I don't think I will be approved is that my mom was not born in the UK. He father may not have been either.
I am wondering if anyone here can help me clear this up. The fees to apply as a citizen and then for a passport was quite pricey so I do not want to just "try it out".
If I would not qualify through descent, is there any other way to apply other than going on a work visa (which I can get with the work I do) and waiting out the 5 years.
On a side note, my brothers are both born to the same mother, in Canada but both born after 1983, am I correct in thinking they have a much easier time getting their passports than I do?
Thanks!!!
