If I'm applying for citizenship based on the fact I've had IDR and been in the UK for more than 10 years, will they need my the passport of my resident country and if not, can I travel whilst the application is ongoing?
I know that I need to allow approx 6 months for the whole process to complete.

Unless you apply through the NCS (who will take a copy) you will have to submit your passport.

Alternatively you make use a certified copy of the passport in order to keep your own. Certified by a commissioner for oaths.

The point is that I have a wedding to attend so if I got a certified copy can I travel abroad while the application is in?

Use the NCS service at your local council, that way you get to keep your passport and BRP with ILR and are free to travel while your application is processed.
Or as Amber suggested, submit your application with a certified copy of your passport and ILR BRP.
