Eligibity for British Citizenship via Hong Kong Born Mother?

I am hoping someone may be able to provide me with some advice in regards to whether I may have a claim for British citizenship as I would like to one day settle in the United Kingdom.

My mother was born in Hong Kong in 1935. She married my Australian born father in 1968 and naturalised as an Australian citizen in 1970. She did not formally renounce whatever British nationality status she had in Hong Kong at the time she became Australian citizen. I should also point out, in case this may be of relevance, that she was not ethnic Chinese. She and her family were classified as ethnic minority as she had a Malaysian born ethnic Malay mother and a Hong Kong born Indian father.

I was born in Australia in 1972 and have held Australian citizenship since birth.

Unfortunately as my mother is now deceased I do not have her old Hong Kong British documents other than her birth certificate and a statutory declaration that she held a Hong Kong permanent identity card and a British issued passport in Hong Kong (the passport number is mentioned).

I have attempted to trace whether I may have eligibility for British citizenship on my father's side. It would appear that I probably do not as my father, paternal grandfather and paternal great-grandfather were all born in Australia.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. :D
