I am a Australian citizen, born in Australia (in 1976) with an Australian father and British mother. My Australian passport is up for renewal and it currently has a ROA certificate which i believe will expire when my Australian passport does. I'm currently in Australia.

Rather than apply again for the ROA (which is a lengthy process) I was wonder if I can apply for a British passport instead so that future renewals are easier. So my question is, am i eligible to apply for British passport rather than the ROA?

No. Not directly, as you are not yet British. However, if your mother was British otherwise than by descent at the time of your birth, then you should be entitled to register first.

Searching around I saw to register its approx 900 pounds. Does that sound correct?

Once registered I can then apply for a passport.

Yep, £823, thats what I saw. Then I would need another £86 (approx, maybe more if I applied from Australia with the various costs)

The main reason I was interested in the UK Passport over the ROA was my partner has one and she can uses the express lanes when travelling through the EU Countries. Other than that I don't see much difference between the ROA and Passport while living here in Australia. Would you agree

Correction: UKM fees may be only £80.

Based on the cost being £80 I've started to pull together all the required documents like passports and birth certificates. How are the documents returned to me? the UKM Form Guide only mentions Royal Mail for Domestic destinations. Also, do they need my Australian Passport as part of the application or will birth certificate suffice? I'm concerned I'm going to be 3-months without passport.

I've received an email form the British Consulate-General in Sydney who have confirmed they will perform the ceremony, so I know where to go for that part of the process and will including their address on the application.
