First, thanks for this forum because this has helped me a lot during my ILR application.

I am an engineer and just joined a new company. My manager hasn't known me long enough (for more than 3 years). But I have a close friend (he is a University lecturer in Economics) and he has known me personally. Can he act as my professional referee for my British Citizen application, although I have never deal with him in professional capacity? Please could you advise.

Yes, you can use the lecturer as professional referee and then use another person (British and over 25) for your personal referee.
