Old passport expiring during naturalization process

Hello,
I am currently in the UK with an Indian passport and an ILR [ 5 years work permit(old scheme) + 1.5 years on ILR]
I intend to apply for naturalization in January 2015.
My Indian passport expires in early May 2015.
My questions:
1. If I am naturalized, say in July/August period, am I legally allowed to stay in the UK during the months of May to July ( when the Indian passport would have expired)? Will it have a bearing on the naturalization process itself?
2. I do intend to get an OCI card after once I get the British passport (lets say in Sept 2015). Will the Indian high commission penalize me for not renewing it before it expired? If so, what actions do they take?
3. Am I better of renewing the Indian passport before applying for naturalization even though I will not be using it?
Thanks,
Gopichand.
