British passport for kid received but got couple of queries

Dear all,

Received British Passport for my kid in the post yesterday.

Got couple of queries.

i) What do we do with kid's Biometric Resident Permit after receiving British Passport? Is there an address I can post it to as this is no longer needed & I wouldn't want to misplace it or have my kid accidentally throw it in the dishwasher just like he throws my credit cards.

ii) Will the Certificate of Registration be required at any point in the future? Unfortunately we aren't supposed to laminate it & can only fold it once. So it will be an added responsibility to keep it safe all the time especially from my kid. Just thinking if at any point we end up misplacing this certificate will it cause an issue & if there's an easy way to request a copy of it.

Thanks for reading. Quick help on this will be appreciated.

1. You can keep it, there is no need to send it back. Alternatively email them and ask.

2. The registration certificate is really, really important in terms of documents, the same as birth certificates. I would suggest you not laminate it as if you do need to use it in future, it will not be accepted. Who said it can only be folded once (source)? They are easy to get replacements of if lost etc and there is a fee attached to replacement certificates (£94 I think). My advice would be to have a couple of photocopies certified and keep an electronic copy.

Replacement fee now increased to £162.

Thanks so much.

@CR001 - I think while applying for the passport for kid, I did read some note advising to fold the Certificate of Registration only once.

Regarding kid's BRP card, I'll either send it to Home Office by post by recorded delivery & covering letter or next time I travel abroad, I'll return it to the immigration officer at the airport.

It is your choice but there is no need to return it to HO. Most people keep it as a reminder of the journey they have been on. Also, if BC passport is lost/stolen, then at least if urgent travel is required, you have the BRP if it is an ILR one.

That's good then, one less thing to worry. I'd thought Home Office will chase & possibly levy fine or late fees for failing to return BRP back to them upon acquiring citizenship. Strange that they don't ask for it.

Out of curiosity, is there a quick guide or link which clarifies circumstances when the Certificate of Registration will be asked for & have to produced without fail in addition to British Passport? This will be very helpful to know.

They probably don't ask for it to be returned as it is not a legal requirement to hold a British Passport and some people wait a long time before applying for passports.

If they wanted them returned, I guess they would keep them then when you apply for naturalisation.

Note that the Certificate of Registration conveys British nationality. A British passport doesn't.
