Naturalisation - Good Character - Tax

Hi,
1) I have an outstanding amount of tax to be paid which is approx around £300. HMRC has changed my tax code since May 2015 in order to recover the amount.
Do i need to wait till this amount has been recovered before applying for the naturalisation. I been trying to getting in touch with them to see if i can pay back the remaining amount but it is very hard to get in contact with them.
2) I heard that HO will do checks to see for any unpaid money to the government. Do they always do these checks?Or just random checks?
Thanks in advance

How you came to know about this unpaid tax? did HMRC contact you ? If HMRC have changed your tax code to recover this tax, that has been sorted out and you can apply BC now. I give you my own example , In 2007/08 , I had 2 jobs and only paid tax for one job and not paid any tax around £400 for 2nd job and there was no any visa problem due to this unpaid tax and HMRC never contacted me, In 2013/14 , I overpaid around £600 tax and then contacted HMRC for refund and at that point HMRC told me that I have to pay £400 for 2007/08 and they only refunded me £200. Pls note that this info are based on my own experience and does not consist of any advice, thank you.

Hi,
I received a letter from HMRC few months back about tax code change. Since May 2015 they changed my tax code of my first job to 898 which was 1060L.
I spoke to them and was told that i can pay the remaining amount and has to wait till they send me an invoice for the outstanding amount.
But since they already taking some money from me, I assume its safe to apply for BC.
**** Btw do you know what other kind of checks they do? Do they check for housing benefits as well. I have a small amount to pay(less than £150). I have a settlement plan of £50 each month.
Done 2 CRB checks before as a part of my job requirement 2 years back and never had issues.
Thank you in advance

Dear all.
1) Can a college lecturer act as a professional referee? Does the professional referee needs to be a BC . If he has ILR will that be sufficient.
2)Can a Manager (Night operational manager - He is responsible for 12+ hotels) act as a Professional referee.
Unfortunately even if he qualifies he has the same SURNAME as mine but we are NOT related. Will this cause an issue.
Thank you in advance

1) Yes (= teacher).
No - professional referee can be any nationality as per:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... _final.pdf
Yes, ILR will be OK as professional referee can be any nationality (as above).
2) You can check
Manager (Night operational manager) on this list of acceptable professional persons:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... ersons.pdf
You can explain the name clash in the
Further Information section of the form;
if HO wish to they will contact the referee so they are well able to verify his credentials.

If they meet all HO requirements (have known you 3 years, are of good character & etc etc) they should be acceptable.
If someone is not acceptable HO will write to you & ask for another referee.

Thanks for the swift response
Does HO always call the referees to check or is it a
random check
Even if I know the person very well I'm not sure about some part of them eg If they have paid tax properly or any issues with court
Do i need to be aware about that area as well?
Thank you

According to their guidance the HO do not routinely contact referees, (they do so only if they have any
concerns) - see section 6.3.7.1:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... 6_v5_0.pdf
Referees should not have been convicted of an
imprisonable offence
in past 10 years - so a parking ticket or 2 will not make them a bad referee.
It would ofcourse be prudent to be reasonably sure of the calibre of your referees
