Citizenship for wife

Hi,
Thanks for all the information and help you provide on this forum.
My wife came to UK in Jan 2012 as my dependant (Teir-1 general) and we both got our ILRs together in May 2014. I have recently received my citizenship. Is my understanding correct that I can apply for my wife's citizenship based on the fact she is spouse of British Citizen, came into the country before the July 2012 rule and been in the country for more than 3 years?
A friend of mine did the same thing in April and got it. However I was told by another person that to be qualified for this I should have been a British Citizen before July 2012. Can you please confirm this? Thanks
regards,
Rabiullah Syed
