Once you’ve got your certificate of British citizenship, you must send your biometric residence permit back to the Home Office (CLICK) within 5 days of either:
going to your citizenship ceremony,
getting your certificate of British citizenship

Cut up your biometric residence permit and put it in a windowless envelope with a note saying you’re returning your permit because you’ve become a citizen.

You’ll be fined up to £1,000 if you don’t return your permit in 5 days.

You can’t use your biometric residence permit for travel once you’ve become a British citizen. Apply for British passport or right of abode certificate.
I got PR through EEA family member route. The PR is pasted on my previous passport. It is not a separate card. How could I send it back?

could you people guide me please, about my situation????

If you have PR you don't have a BRP...so you can't return it. :|

The returning of BRP (which is a card like a drivers license) is NOT relevant to you. You can ignore this requirement.

i was wondering the same thing - but then looked into procedure around obtaining first british passport and it seems there is no way but post my current national passport with the application (hello, Big Brother!).
So i would not have been able to travel on my Permanent Residence sticker anyway.. Which really sucks given that wait time for the first passport is - according to gov.co.uk - at least 6 weeks

Hello, my citizenship ceremony was on 19th July and the letter of invitation never mentioned anything about the time frame of 5 days to send the BRP back for destruction, nor the ceremony mentioned anything. My letter from Home office says" you have to return the BRP cut into half in a windowless envelope once you have received your certificate of British citizenship" . Today I accidently visited Gov.UK and read there was a time frame of 5 days to send the BRP back. It's now been 3 weeks. I was totally unaware about the timeframe of 5 days as it was never communicated to me. I am sending them today, but I am little concerned whether I would get the penalty of £1000 specified in the letter. Please advise
Thank you
