Son Born Abroad, Register as BC or Apply for Passport?

I hope someone will be able to advise me.

My son, now 18 months, was born in Kazakhstan, his mother is a Kazakhstan citizen. I'm British by birth.
He is currently living here in the UK with me and has a Kazakhstan passport with a UK "Certificate of Entitlement" we received recently.

We want him to have full BC if possible and to have a UK passport, what is the best way of approaching it?
Should we apply to register him as a British citizen using form MN1? Or can we go straight ahead and apply for a passport?

I've worked my way through the passport application form and there doesn't seem to be any reason I can't just apply for that for him? As I understand it he should automatically be classed as British by descent.

Is there more than one route we could take with this?

If you were born in the UK your child is indeed British by descent and you can apply directly for a UK passport for him.

He is British by descent.

 Apply straight for passport.
