Hi there,
I hope that someone will be able to help me.
I am a French citizen and I have been living and working in the UK since November 2011. My boyfriend is a British citizen (both his mum and dad are british and he was born in the UK).
We are trying for a baby and I will be asking the NHS the permission to go to France to give birth. I have fertility problems and even though I see a Gyne in the UK, my gyne in France is still following me privately. He knows everything about me and my problem and think it will be safer for me if he could assist the birth (if I manage to get pregnant).
I am planning on coming back to the UK as soon as possible after the birth (maybe after a month or so).
My questions are :
- What nationality will my baby be?
- I know that I have to register the birth in the country where the baby is born, but how do I get my baby a passport to come back home?

French (presumably).

And, if born abroad, to a British ('other than by descent') father then she will also be British by descent.

As child is going to be British just apply for a passport from wherever you are (should be processed within a month or so).

I assume you could also apply for a French passport too.
Child could travel on either.

UK supports dual (even triple) nationality and it is completely permissible to be such a citizen of the world.

You will have to check if La Belle France does too.

As long as you don't need to submit the exact same documents (eg your &/or father's passports) to both government/passport agencies at the same time then don't see why you couldn't apply for both at same time.

I will just keep my fingers crossed for baby number 1 to hurry up now.

Another possibility would be for the baby to come back on a French ID card.

If you want the baby to come back on a passport, it would probably be cheaper and more convenient to get the French passport in France and the British passport in Britain. Remember, though, that if the baby has a French passport, it will have to submit that passport with the application for a French passport.

As far as costs are concerned, the only difference between applying from France or the UK is the courier fee of £19.86 in addition to the standard fee for a child's passport of £53.00. All applications are processed in the UK now and currently take around 6 weeks for the first passport.
