Hi,

If a child is born abroad and both parents are naturalized UK citizens, does that child automatically acquire UK citizenship? I am a little bit confused with terminology in Home Office guidance. I will be grateful for any information.

The child is automatically British (by descent).

Assuming a parent was British before child was born.

yes, both parents naturalized before the child was born. so it looks as simple as registering a birth when the child comes to UK and then applying for her/his passport? is that so?

And what if only one parent is UK and EU citizen and mother is NZ citizen? Is child automatically getting all 3 citizenships?

It depends on the nationality laws of the other countries. Some EU countries will only allow fathers to pass citizenship onto their born abroad children if they are married to the mother etc. Not all countries have unconditional jus soli either (the UK doesn't any more).

My sister was born with citizenship of 3 countries.

Your child has hit the jackpot and is already British so just shoot directly for the holy grail of British passport. Either from abroad or from within UK.

There's no need to register the birth in the UK, significant expense and very little benefit. The child's birth should be registered in the country of birth. Is there a problem with that?

Hello,

Can anyone please let me know if the child is born abroad to parents who are naturalized UK citizens, does this child acquire citizenship by decent automatically or does he/she need to be registered first? If the latter, is it still at HO discretion?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Child is automatically British by Descent if born AFTER parents are naturalised.
