Hi

My question is regarding returning of the BRP Card once you have become British citizen, My cousin became British citizen in Aug 2016. And was naturalised in July 2016. He returned the BRP beside the old passport while he was applying for British Pasport application, However his BRP was returned back. ( i believe it was not sent to right address). He realized very late that in Nov that he still have the BRP. He is worried as he should still return the BRP to HO or not and if he send it back now , will he be fined or not?

Please help

Many Thanks

He shouldn't have sent his BRP to the passport office. What made him think he had to do that?

There is a dedicated address for BRP return, I believe it's on a letter you get when you receive your naturalisation certificate. We haven't heard of anyone actually receiving the fine yet, it's most likely a scare tactic by UKVI to make people actually send them back. Get him to put it in the post ASAP maybe with a cover letter explaining that he sent it to HMPO by mistake. I'm sure he will be fine, as long as he has not used it for travel since he became British.

Hi Oraha

Thanks for your reply. I think he thought that he is applying for British passport and would return it to them and they might keep BRP as he dont need it anymore. So you recomend that he will be fine returning BRP that late?

Many Thanks

He would have received a letter at his ceremony telling him where to send it.
