Child Born abroad, do I need to register as British Citizen?

Hi,
I've been trying to get a definative answer to this but all the information I find is contradictory and confusing so Im hoping someone here can help?

Im British otherwise than by descent as I was born in the UK as were my parents. My wife is also British otherwise than by descent via naturalisation. Our son was recently born in the USA, which as far as I can tell makes him British by descent. Do I have to register him as a British citizen via the MN1 form? Also do I need to apply for indefinate leave to remain?

Thanks

You can apply for a British Passport directly.

Great but with regards to the referees, it says they have to know the child for 2 years? But he's only 4 weeks old.

Not relevant if newborn. Anyone that knows him/you can be a referee.

Alternative and likely quicker process if they are in the US is to apply for a certificate of entitlement on a US passport, as all British passports are processed in the UK.
