The steps are as follows :
1. Meet the requirements obviously.
2. Call the NCS at the Council Registry Office to make an appointment to submit (they charge a small fee).
3. Date of application is the date of your NCS appointment, so important for you to have been physically present on the same date 5 years previously.
4. Complete form AN and the fee sheet.
5. Complete the paper passport form you get from Post Office
6. Submit both completed forms with supporting documents at your NCS appointment.
7. NCS will photo copy ALL your original documents and return them to you and send the copies with your applications.
8. Once sent, HO will debit your AN fee and HMPO will debit your passport fee, likely a couple of weeks apart.
9. HO will at some point, usually a few weeks, send you a letter with a barcode to go an enroll your biometrics at the Post Office. You need to take this letter with you.
10. Then you wait. Some have received approval within a couple of months, others have waited a few months.
11. HO will write to you if they need any info but often not. The next letter you should get is the approval letter, standard 2nd class A5 brown envelope so be careful you don't chuck it as it does look like junk mail.
12. You will get a separate letter inviting you to the ceremony, either a pre booked date or a request to call the council to book it. They do private ceremonies too but these cost extra.
13. Once you have attended your ceremony, the council will inform HO and HO will inform HMPO, then your passport will be printed and sent to you, usually within a couple of weeks.
