Hello and thanks in advance for any help offered. Am I eligible to receive British citizenship? Few pertinent facts:

- father and mother both born in England in 1940’s
- both emigrated to Canada in late 1960’s and took canadian citizenship
- parents had me in Canada in 1970’s, and I am a Canadian citizen. I’ve never had British citizenship.
- Parents divorced in mid-1980’s and father returned to England. He re-took British citizenship / passport.
- Mother stayed in Canada and kept Canadian citizenship.
- Both parents have since passed away and difficult to get more details.

Appreciate your guidance.

There is a reasonably good chance that you are already a British citizen by descent.

But to confirm, can you advise of the month and year that your parents were born, and the month and year of your birth?

Thanks so much for your reply. Father was July-1944 and mother was July-1948. I’m Dec-1971. Is there a
website I can visit to see what documents are required / how I go about proving this all?

Provided your father did not formally renounce his British citizenship before your birth (unlikely), you are a British citizen by descent and can apply directly for a British passport.

For list of documents to prove your claim to British citizenship, see Table B on Page 14 of the Guidance for passport applications.

Be aware that as you are a British citizen by descent, you cannot pass on British citizenship automatically to any children born abroad.

Fantastic. Thanks for your take on things. Honestly have no clue whether my father renounced his British citizenship but I see no point why he would do so ... he seemed to not have missed a beat when he moved back to the UK in the 80’s. Dual-citizenship appears to be fine from a UK perspective so I’m guessing he had both Canadian and British citizenship and perhaps renounced the Canadian one. I suppose I’ll find out as I go thru the application process. Many thanks again.
