Accidently overstayed on holiday visa at 10 years old

Hello,
I was wondering if anybody was able to help me. My partner and I have been together for 6 years now and have a 1 year old together. He was born here and has a British birth certificate, at 4 years old he was moved to Zimbabwe to live with his grandparents, his mum then brought him back at 10 years old, we recently discovered it was on a holiday visa which was never renewed, she never applied for citizenship for him and when he went to Zimbabwe he was stripped of his British nationality.
Does anybody know what our next steps would be? Is he likely to get granted citizenship now (he is 27 years old now so overstayed by 16 years!) or be deported to a country he has never lived his adult life in? He went to university here as a British citizen, has a national insurance number and has worked here since he was 16 years old.
Appreciate any help offered, thank you!
