Child citizenship when visa lapses

Hello and thanks in advanced for providing a great resource here!
My wife and I are in the process of applying for ILR currently and are due to (hopefully) get a decision soon. It was the 24 hour express service, but we can see there are issues with that at the moment.
We have 2 children here, both born here and under 5 years old. They will be entitled to citizenship if our ILR is granted. But we are concerned as their current Tier 2 Dependant Visa's will expire in March.
Do we need to apply for ILR for them to remain in the country while they wait for the 3-6 month Citizenship application? This is expensive, so I would rather not.
Are there any negative implications of them remaining in the country after their visas lapse while they wait for their entitled British Citizenship?
Kind regards,
Andre
