Applying for Dual Citizenship

Hi,

Please help me to clarify this.

Currently I'm on ILR VISA (obtained in May 2018). So I can apply for British citizenship in May 2019. However I very much like to keep my original citizenship too. My country accepts dual citizenship. However I'm not very much clear with the process.
1. when it's time for me to apply for the British citizenship (in May 2019), can I apply for dual citizenship directly without revoking my original nationality?
or
2. do I have to apply for British nationality (and my original nationality will revoke), and then go back to my country and apply for dual nationality there?

Thanks

You just need to apply for British Citizenship, if your country of origin allows dual nationality then you would have both after your British Citizenship ceremony.

Does that mean I don't have to do anything specifically when I apply for the British citizenship in order to keep my original nationality? Will I automatically have dual citizenship?

Thanks

You will need to check with your embassy. It varies from country to country what the requirements are to retain your birth nationality.

For example, a South African citizen has to get permission from the SA embassy to retain SA citizenship before they apply for British citizenship. If they don't, they automatically lose their SA citizenship.

Well, if your application is successful then you would hold both

hey,

You can apply for dual citizenship of SL as soon as you receive your ILR under Retention rule. If you wait till your BC then you'll have to apply under Resumption rule (this is what I did).

-If you go for Resumption category SLHC will cancel you current SL passport (have to pay a small fine)

Hope this helps

Hi drdh4,

Under the resumption rule, have to pay a small fee plus SLR 300000 right?

Could you please clarify this information?
