Passport used to enter the UK with lost & expired

I was born in Ukraine in 1996 but permanently moved to the UK in 2005.
I entered the UK with a Ukrainian child travel document. This travel document expired in 2008 and as a result, I have not left the UK since then.
My parents attempted to send my documents to Ukraine where my grandma + my biological father could apply for another child travel document in but everything was lost by Royal mail (including my birth certificate). My parents went to Ukraine in 2009 to obtain a new copy of a birth certificate and travel document but they did not have enough time to obtain both - so I only have a reissued birth certificate. The immigration people in Ukraine recommended that my mum should add me into her passport, and she did. I have my name, photo and age in her passport (which expired in 2014).
I applied for and obtained british citizenship last month and have sent off an application to obtain a british passport. In this passport application I submitted all correspondence with royal mail, all scanned copies of my expired child travel document plus my mum's original expired passport.
Yesterday I received a letter from the passport office telling me I need to send them the original passport I used to enter the UK with. If this was lost, I must have it replaced by the Ukrainian authorities and send the replacement to the passport office.
I don't understand this as:
1) The travel document has already expired anyway?
2) I cannot obtain a child travel document as it would mean traveling to Ukraine - which I cannot do without a passport
3) I'm over the age to obtain a child travel document anyway
4) I'm now a British citizen, how am I able to obtain a Ukrainian child travel document??
What do I do?
