Has anyone ever posted a passport abroad?

So my son is in the US but his UK passport is back in the UK. I thought it would be easy to post a passport via courier abroad but was surprised that many couriers its on a prohibited list.
DHL and UPS will deliver the passport within 1-3 days but said that it may get held up at customs as its unusual for people to post passports internationally.
So can someone with any experience tell me have they successfully posted a UK passport to the US.
My son needs his UK passport to enter the UK as a UK citizen and not as a US citizen. Or will UK border agency accept photocopies?

Why can't he enter on his us passport and simply explain the situation.
There is no legal requirement that a British citizen just enter the UK on a British passport.

He is years old, if that makes any difference.
With the way UK Border force is these days. Is it more risky to send the passport or try explaining to the Immigration Officer?
Would it make any difference the flight is back via Dublin where we will clear customs I assume?

They won't deny a British citizen entry with an explanation and you are at the airport with the passport.

The flight is coming from DC to Dublin and then to Manchester - I obviously will be at Manchester but doesn't he clear border control in Dublin?

Dublin isn't part of the UK.
The IO in Manchester could still do checks and ask questions.

I have read that a few times but I would not be so sure the border agents know that and if you try to explain it to them they can become difficult.

I called the passport service and they were no help, I then called UKVI who were more interested in visa requirements - it's as if no one knows.
