Do I need MN1 for my British by descent but American Born children?

Very confused by conflicting information I find online and at gov.uk

I am British by Birth, my children born 2015 and 2018 in the USA are British Citizens by descent BUT I have never registered them with any British authorities. I am now moving back to the UK (on my British passport) and need to of course bring my children with me but cannot find a concrete answer if I need to do the *expensive* MN1 for each of them in order to apply for a British passport or if there is another route.

Can I apply for a British passport for them without registering their citizenship? If so what evidence do I provide?

Their Birth certificates are American but I could provide my British Birth certificate as evidence they are citizens by descent.

Confused and hoping to save many thousands of pounds if it is possible.

Were you married to their mother when they were born? The limited research that I have done, this seems to matter.

Only relevant to children born before 2006!

You can apply for passport directly.
