British citizen left passport in hotel but travelling tomorrow

My son has done a boo boo. He’s driving up from Spain and has left his U.K. passport at a hotel 7 hours ago (hotel have confirmed its safe!) He's now overnighting in France with the intention of catching an evening ferry tomorrow back to the U.K.

His dilemma is; does he plough on in the hope that he will be able to enter the U.K. with his driving license and copy of his passport? Under the Right to Abode, I assume he cannot be denied entry to his home country without the passport? If not, he faces a 14 hour round trip and rebooking the crossing.

The passport will be collected by a friend who conveniently lives in the city and can deliver it to him on his return.

Many thanks.

Hello

If he makes it to a British port, he will enter. Border Officers are not going to deport a British citizen because he doesn't have a passport on him. They will sort the situation out.

However, the problem is with the ferry operator. I am not sure they will let him board with a driving license.
