Here is the history
2019-2020- Tier 4 DES
2020-2022 - skilled worker visas
2022-2023 - Global Talent
2023 onwards - ILR
Can I apply this year for citizenship or does Tier 4 DES not count towards the 5 year lawful residence period?

It counts. Why would it not count? It is a visa.
And unless you are married to a British citizen, you don't qualify for citizenship yet.

Thank you for that!
To clarify, I have lived in the UK since 2015, first on TIER 4 GENERAL from 2015-2019, then the Tier 4 DES period, then 2 years of skilled worker visas, then Global Talent and then ILR. I will very soon have had ILR for one year. So are you saying that the Tier 4 and Tier 4 DES does not count towards the 5 year period for citizenship (which includes one year of ILR?) ?

Read the first to words I typed again in my response.
Where do you conclude I said it does not count??
Citizenship is not an immigration application where certain visas are excluded from a qualifying period.

Sorry, I know you said that counts, my query was in relation to the latter part, which I should have phrased better. Why would I need to be married to a British citizen to qualify if I have 5 years residence (including one year ILR)? Have I misunderstood somehow?

If you are married to a British citizen, it is an application based on 3 years residence and you do not need to wait 12 months on ilr.
I was merely indicating you don't qualify for citizenship yet.

Thanks, I understand now!
Basically I just need to just wait for the 12 month mark of ILR at which point I can consider applying.
Thanks for the advice and clarifications!
