Hi,

My wife and I are both British citizens. We got married in Mauritius 8 years ago. Our wedding certificate is the original with an apostille stamp. The document’s primary language is English and the second language is French. Here is an example of a Mauritius wedding certificate:

My wife is applying for a renewal of her British passport and is changing from her maiden name to my surname. She received an email from the Passport Office:

"We need you to resend documents
We cannot continue with your passport application because the marriage certificate you sent needs a translation."

What exactly do they want us to translate? English to English? I've called the Passport Office about 8 times with each person saying something different. I've called the Mauritius Consulate and they say they have never heard of such a request because it's an official document in English (as the primary language) and French.

I also called a translation company, sent them my certificate and they laughed at the request. The translation company said I should send a letter telling them it's in english and they should actually look at the document

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Personally I would respond to the request saying that the document is already in English.

Often the Home Office send these sort of requests, by mistake or else. We just need to respond accordingly.

The HMPO phone helpline is outsourced to a third-party supplier, they're not Home Office staff and often are not helpful with these requests.
