Citizenship Application wit Notarised copy of Passport?

The UKBA webpage indicates that applications for citizenship need actual documents, not copies, however I have heard that under current laws you can apply for citizenship with a notarised copy of your passport, rather than sending away your passport for the months it takes to process the application.

I work in the airline business and need to travel frequently as part of my job, so obviously I would prefer to apply for citizenship without sending in my passport if at all possible.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for any responses.

Apply via the Nationality Checking Service (see the home office site) - they'll copy and validate all documents - it'll let you keep hold of everything.
