ILR - British citizenship for dependants?

My family has lived in the UK since 24 August 2005 under my husband's work permit (5 yrs. work permit and currently, Tier 2 permit status) sponsored by American based company located in UK. He is still needed and employment is ongoing. He wishes to apply for ILR, including dependants (wife & two children) on application. If primary applicant and dependants are granted ILR status, can dependants remain in country and eventually apply for British citizenship even if my husband (primary applicant) is, at a later date, requested to return to the USA to continue employment? Our intention is to settle in the UK by applying for British citizenship one year following status of ILR; thus, allowing our children to continue education and future employment in the UK. Is a dependant's continuing status of ILR, contingent upon whether the primary applicant remains in the UK after status is granted? Would the children and I be denied British citizenship based solely on the fact that my husband might no longer reside in the UK one year after status of ILR was granted?
