Can I apply for citizenship?

I got ILR in July 2008 on 10 yr rule basis.
From July 2009-Jun 2010 I was in US on a fellowship program. I am now currently employed in a permanent post here in UK. Never been illegal.
The main sticking point in my citizenship application is that I was outside the country for the past 1 yr.
I would like to get citizenship/naturalisation asap.....am I eligible? Will I get some leeway at all?
