British Citizenship - Questions

Hi all,
I was wondering if you guys could help me with the questions below.
1- I've been working for the same company for over 5 years and have been paying income tax through PAYE. I will be leaving this company on June 10 and, hopefully, might start a new job by the end of July. My appointment with the Nationality Checking Service is on June 29. I just want to confirm that I can still apply since I might be between jobs (unemployed) by the time I apply.
2- Considering the answer for question 1 is yes, what should I state at items 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4 of the form AN. Should I state I'm an employee and put the name of my former employer?
3- Referee - One of my referees is a British citizen and we have been working together for over 5 years. We are now friends. Is there any problem to have a work colleague as a referee?
4- Do I need to submit my passport or, since I will be applying through NCS, a photocopy would suffice?
