I came to the UK in October 2005, Student Visa till Dec 07, Post study (1 yr) till Jan 09, Spousal Visa (2 yrs) till Feb 2011, Got ILR at end of Feb.

I have heard that I can apply for British Citizenship within 1 year of ILR..

Please, can anyone confirm this?

Many thanks in advance!!

Casa can you expanciate on this, as to my understanding the OP needs to wait for 12 months before applying albeit the 28 days before eligibility date.

Firstly, just to emphasise it, for Naturalisation applications there is no 28 day leeway. But actually that does not apply to you as you are married to a British Citizen.

Think of it this way, for those not married to (or in Civil Partnership with) a British Citizen then ILR needs to be held for at least one year. But for those married to (or in Civil Partnership with) a British Citizen, then ILR needs to be held for at least one second .... and actually that is an exaggeration!

So on the face of it you can apply now, but do ensure that you were physically in the UK exactly 3 years before UKBA will receive the Naturalisation application.

This is completely new info to me.

So john, if you may elaborate, if one is married to a british national, do they need to apply for ILR first then naturalization soon after?

or they can just apply naturalization straight?

i ask this because both processes are not cheap. you will need close to £2000 to have both one after the another

One cannot apply for naturalisation before acquiring / being granted settlement.

you don't need to apply for citizenship - it is your choice.
