Getting a child's British Passport if born outside the UK

My son was recently born in Pakistan and is British (by descent due to my nationality) and Pakistani (due to his fathers nationality). I am planning to travel to the UK with my son and am trying to find out the best way to get his British passport. If I apply from Pakistan it will take up to 6 months and all my documents will travel to Islamabad, then Hong Kong, then to the UK... risky! My son will have a Pakistani passport also.

Is there a way of getting into the UK without the British passport? (I know I can apply for a British passport whilst in the UK and it will take one week only).

Are there specific travel documents issued by the local consulate (not visas) which will allow my son to enter the UK?

Any help is appreciated.

In the absence of a British passport, it would be appropriate for a British citizen to apply for a Certificate of Entitlement to the Right of Abode, to be placed in a Pakistan Passport.
