Naturalization after ILR - Direct.gov.uk or UKBA.HomeOffice?

Hi,

I hold Indian passport and I got my ILR for me and my wife in Feb 2012. I am aware that I will be eligible for citizenship in Feb 2013.

My question is, when applying for Citizenship should I apply through Direct.gov.uk (online application of British passport) or through UKBA HomeOffice by filling form AN?

My mate also informed that, I have to apply online for British Passport and then attend the interview conducted by IPS.

I googled and did some research however, I could not find right the answer.

Please help me.

Thanks.

Vijay.

UKBA form AN. You'll have to be granted Citizenship before you're able to apply for a British passport....and yes, you will have to attend an interview before the passport is issued.

Even for the passport, the online service IPS provides on direct.gov.uk is just help in filling in the application form which is then printed and posted back to you to sign and return it to them. Much easier just to pick up a passport application form from the Post Office.

Thank you.

Just to make sure you got this right..

you will pick up the form from the post office when you wish to apply for passport. But you can only apply for passport of the country once you are citizen of that country so to apply for naturalization you will have to fill up the form AN which you can download from UKBA site here

Thanks manyaonisland

Hello manyaonisland,

Thank you for your response.

Yes I understood now...

Step1: Apply for Naturalization using Form AN. Once it is approved,
Step2: Apply for British Passport
Step3: Surrender Previous passport(s)

Is my understanding correct now?

Thanks.

Just to make it totally clear, after "Once it is approved" add "and been handed the Certificate of Naturalisation at a Citizenship Ceremony."

That is, you are not British until the certificate is handed to you.

Thanks
