Wondering what happens when I need my passport back. Its been months now and I dont see why they need to keep my passport other than for the initial id purposes.
Can I ask for it back or will it stop my wifes application?

You can request to have it returned....and it won't affect your wife's application assuming they've taken all the details needed from it. The UKBA usually quote a 20 day return time following the request, but allow for longer.
