Re Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Hello All:
I am currently a student on Tier 4 visa and entered the country on September 14, 2012 to pursue my Masters. On completion I plan to pursue my PhD in Management or Finance for the next 4 years until 2017. If I stay in the UK on Tier 4 student visa until 2017, I will have stayed for a total of 5 years in the UK as a student -- in that case, am I eligible to apply for and submit ILR and apply for UK residency?
Can you please provide advice or suggestions as to what route exists for immigration for PhD applicants or students majoring in Finance or Management?
Thank you

The way UKBA is changing the ILR rules very frequently,it is difficult to predict definitely what rule would be applicable for your ILR in 2017.

No. 5 years period under student visa does not qualify for ILR even having PHD.

Okay, but currently is one allowed to apply for ILR based on 5 years of stay under Tier 4 student visa?

Only the employment related routes and investor/enterpreneur route leads towards ILR after 5 years.

Spousal visa of 5 years also leads to ilr (used to be 2 years), discretionary leave after 6 years, long residency after 10 years etc.... There are a number of different routes to ilr, ile. Your circumstances are specific to what you can apply for successfully, thus.

long residency after 10 years etc....
strictly speaking about student and strictly following the main OP's query then due to ACADEMIC PROGRESSION concern a student can maximum stay till 8 years with PHD despite it can be extended with the mixture of other routes too.

Most recently a new program has been introduced to grant 12 month of leave to PHD students in order to switch to other categories. BUT in 2017 time as op wished it is unpredictable as what might have been changed/re-introduced.
