You need to be able to adequately maintain and accommodate yourself. Basically, for a couple with no children, an income of £112.55 Net per week after rent deduction to be available. Have you claimed tax credits?

The tax credits claim
must be in joint names. The child benefit should be in her sole name. If you are getting tax credits, then you should get WTC if you are self-employed and 'working' for at least 24 hours a week between you both, with one of you working at least 16 hours a week. The term working is broad when considering self-employed and can include admin etc so it should be feasible to make the 24 hrs per week.
For a couple with 2 children the income you should be looking at is £243.79 Net per week after rent/mortgage deduction. You can include child benefit and tax credits.

If the claim is not in joint names, it could be classed as benefit fraud. You must have a couple claim for tax credits. You just tell them what you are earning.

Yes and tell them approx how many hours you work per week including admin etc... I.e. 25, and how much you make roughly per week. Expect the claim to be suspended whilst they work it out.
