Hi,

I am applying for my ILR on the 29th October 2013. I know the HO have introduced a new English Language (ESOL) requirement in addition to the Life in the UK test from the 28th October onwards.

My question is : I have a Master's degree from the UK, will I still have to take the ESOL test or am I exempted? If I am exempted, what evidence do I need to show for my degree? i.e degree certificate/transcript...?

Will appreciate your response on this please.

You can use the old forms for 21 days after 28/10/13.

A UK degree would not need proof it was taught in English but may require a NARIC statement of comparability. Although, if you satisfied a B1 English requirement for entry clearance that should suffice.

The statement of comparability applies to "oversease" qualifications as it says on the NARIC website below:
"The UK NARIC Statement of Comparability is an officially recognised document that confirms the recognition of an overseas qualification and its comparable level in the UK, irrespective of it being an academic, vocational or professional award."

As I have a qualification from the UK i.e. not overseas, do you think I really need that?

Also I get points on the PBS Calculator for my degree. Do you think my degree certificate should be sufficient?

The degree certificate and a print out from the PBS calculator should suffice. The rules imply the degree should be deemed by NARIC to be comparable even if taught in the UK, as the PBS calculator is populated by NARIC, that should suffice.

I called up the NARIC office and they said that they do not provide statement of comparability or English language assessment for UK qualifications.

So I assume it is not expected for me to get those for my application. As long as I have a UK degree/certificate along with PBS points printout, it should be fine.

Well they must compare UK degrees as the PBS calculator is populated by NARIC or at least points are awarded. However, yes, I suspect the print out will suffice.

I'm sure someone would able to clear my doubt, I have to apply ILR for my wife post 28th Oct 2013. She has passed Life in the UK test. Our doubt is in terms of degree taught in English, my wife has got the 'statement of comparability' certificate from the UK Naric for her bachelors degree.

Note: Statement of comparability don't explicitly specify that the degree is taught in English. Also we don't have a letter from the university as a proof to tell the degree is taught in English.

Though we don't need to show any points for my wife's ILR when I checked her qualification on PBS calculator, it does recognizes her university and grants 10 points for English skills.

My question is do we need to get 'English language assessment' certificate from the UK Naric? Or would we get away with the Statement of Comparability.

Sorry if I'm being picky, again its the question of do we need to spend another 60 pounds to get this 'English language assessment'.

what assessment for 60 quids? pls share. everything I see is upwards of 150.
