ILE -> NTL BRP Application? Correct way to go?

My child has an ILE visa stamp with an expiry date set the same as his passport (Mar 2014).

My child is in the UK and I now wish to renew his passport at his country's embassy so we will be able to travel next year.

Before I renew his passport at the embassy I would love if someone could confirm that am I right in thinking that I should be applying for the "NTL TOC BRP", or an "Application For
No Time Limit (NTL) And A Biometric Immigration Document By Someone Who Already Has Indefinite Leave To Enter Or Remain In The UK"

This card would then replace his ILE visa stamp?

I'm pretty sure i'm right, but sometimes it's good to check just in case I've overlooked something!

I wonder if we'll have to make the trip for Biometrics at the post office, since they already took his biometrics not so long ago for the ILE application...

Does anyone know the length of validity given for these cards?
