ILR and Traffic Offence after submission of application

I applied for ILR at the end of November. On 7th December I was pulled over by the police because (unbeknownst to me) I was driving with 3 tyres below the legal limit and no MOT (expired September). I will be receiving a court summons for a court date in the next 6 months. My ILR is also due to come through within 6 months.
We think that if the ILR comes through before the court case, we'll be safe and dry... Does that sound right? Here are the biggest questions we have:
- Will ILR automatically be refused when I am convicted?
- Can I change ILR application to the 'in person' application at this point?
- Do I need to inform UKBA that there will be a court proceedings?
- If my ILR application is refused & we need to apply for an extension to my spouse visa, will the new rules apply? Or the old rules that my last spouse visa came under? (we're ineligible under new rules, wife is a SAHM to small baby)
(FURTHER INFO: My wife and sons (6m.o. & 3y.o) are all British. I am working in the UK and studied here. I have been here legally since September 2006. I have no other convictions, and until this stupid mistake I thought my ILR application was a formality
Thanks for any and all help!
