Continuous period (Tier 1 General)

I had a ~250 days break between Oct 2011 and April 2012 (two breaks of ~120 days each, with 15 days in UK between the breaks in Jan 2012). This was just for personal reasons to spend time with kids / family abroad (i.e. no paid leave).

My understanding is:
1) If I apply for ILR in October 2015, it will effect the continuous residence.
2) If I apply for ILR in January 2016, my continuous residence will be ok since the time will be split into two different years. (Oct 11 - Jan 12 and Jan 12 - April 12)

Also, since my absence was not related to employment or compassionate reasons, I will only have a personal letter to explain that was out to spend time with family / kids. Will that be ok, since I will meet the continuous residence test for any 12 months prior to the application date and no single break is longer than 180 days?
